It has been reported that a new government department of energy and climate change is being established. This is very good news. BERR, the Department for Business, did not understand the urgency of climate change and dithered and dabbled on energy policy for years never accepting that without a serious lead from Government, the energy sector in the UK will not tackle its carbon emissions. Ed Miliband, the minister at the new department, will now have to move quickly to create a coherent energy policy that makes clear the precise carbon cuts the Government expects of the sector and outlines a path to achieving these through enforcement and resourcing.
