Cuts Watch #25: Extension of free prescriptions under threat

01 Jun 2010, by in Cuts Watch

Asthma UK have noted that the last Government’s pledge to introduce free prescriptions for everyone with a long-term health condition may not now be implemented. The prescription charges review, which considers how to introduce the exemption from prescription charges for people with long-term conditions, was published last week – but the Government have refused to be drawn on whether the change will now take place. Earl Howe, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Quality said:

“Any decisions on future changes to the system of prescription charges and exemptions would need to be taken in the context of the next Spending Review, which is due to report in the Autumn.”
