Cuts Watch #27: General Teaching Council to be abolished

03 Jun 2010, by in Cuts Watch

The Department for Education has announced that it will be introducing legislation to abolish the General Teaching Council. In a statement to Parliament Michael Gove said that:

I believe this organisation does little to raise teaching standards or professionalism. Instead it simply acts as a further layer of bureaucracy while taking money away from teachers.

The GTC is taking legal advice, stating that:

The GTC was created by Parliament to work in the public interest to improve standards of professional conduct among teachers, to contribute to raising standards of teaching and learning and to raise the standing of the teaching profession.
