Cuts Watch #65: Further clarification on free school meals

16 Jun 2010, by in Cuts Watch

Following last week’s negative publicity on funding cuts for free school meals, The Department for Education has issued a press release setting out exactly how planned extensions will be cut.

  • Local pilots of free school meals will not go ahead in Islington, Bradford, Nottingham, Cumbria and Medway.
  • Free school meals will not be extended to maintained nursery and Key Stage 1 pupils whose parents are on Working Tax Credit, with household incomes up to £16,190.
  • In addition, plans to extend free school meals to older pupils whose parents are on low incomes will no longer go ahead.

A DfE spokesperson described these cuts as ‘savings’.
