Cuts Watch #68: Cuts in ESOL provision

16 Jun 2010, by in Cuts Watch

Kirkless College is cutting 30 teaching posts from its English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) department. The college principal has stated that a result of government cuts in adult funding, decisions have been taken to ‘reduce the costs of delivery across Kirklees’. In total, 3,600 hours less of teaching time will be available over the year.

Most of the people who attend the college’s ESOL classes are refugees, asylum seekers or Pakistani-born women – they will now face much longer waiting times to access ESOL courses and learn English.
