Cuts Watch #163: Services for Young People in Birmingham

30 Jul 2010, by in Cuts Watch

Birmingham City Council plans to make 430 workers redundant in the Connexions service and the Children and Young People’s Department. The Council says that the services that will be affected include, in addition to Connexions, Children’s Homes, Contact and Escort Services and the Children’s Commissioning Team; a spokesperson blamed the Government’s reduction of the Area Based Grant for a loss of up to £6.1 million.

Workers who may be affected have been issued with redundancy notices, and the Council has told the GMB that 430 staff may be dismissed.

On Wednesday we reported that cuts in Connexions services were likely across the country – the fact that the grants that pay for this valuable work aren’t ‘ring-fenced’ means that it is especially vulnerable as Councils struggle to cope with the cut in area-based funding.
