Cuts Watch #199: Regional Business Link

12 Aug 2010, by in Cuts Watch

Cuts to regional Business Link services are starting to impact on jobs. 125 staff in Yorkshire are reportedly facing redundancy, as are 47 in the West Midlands. Many positions in Durham are also at risk. Business Minister Mark Prisk has said that he is “very sceptical” about the effectiveness of regional Business Link services. The services aim to provide free advice and support to business across the UK, supporting businesses with areas including employment law, tax and payroll issues, marketing, sales and IT.

The cuts appears to be a concequence of the Government’s abolition of Regional Development Agencies, which provided significant funding to regional Business Links. In the West Midlands this has apparently led to a 28 per cent cut in Business Link’s budget.
