Cuts Watch #213: The impact of Local Area Grant cuts

20 Aug 2010, by in Cuts Watch

Evidence is growing on the impacts of local area grant cuts for local services. For example, in Westminster two early years centres are facing cuts of around £90,000 each and in Birmingham 36 frontline workers from the children’s services department are facing redundancy. In Swindon the council is proposing to withdraw funding for the annual play service budget which funds eight free play schemes across the town for children between the ages of six and 14, and to review the Connected Support Employment service which helps people with learning difficulties find jobs.

Inevitably it is the poorest and those in  greatest need who are most affected by these cuts – public services support people in these groups the most.
