Cuts Watch #228: Streetlights

It has been widely reported today that councils are turning off streetlights to save cash. There is disagreement as to whether crime and accidents will increase. While Leicestershire county council claims that neither accidents or crime will rise, and that lights are only switched off after consultation with the police, Louise Ellman MP,  Chair of the Transport Select Committee, fears that such policies will lead to higher injury rates as a result of traffic accidents.
