Cuts Watch #236: Subsidised meals for older and disabled people in Tyneside

10 Sep 2010, by in Cuts Watch

A stark illustration of the way in which cuts are inevitably hitting the worst off from Tyneside, where meal subsidies and luncheon clubs in the borough are facing significant funding reductions. The Sheields Gazette reports that the authority is to withdraw subsidised meals to eight luncheon clubs, and charitable organisations, impacting on hundreds of predominantly disabled and older people.

Coun Emma Lewell, the council’s lead member for independent and healthy lives, said: “Government cuts are forcing us into making some very difficult decisions. The decision to change how we do things has not been taken lightly, but unfortunately we cannot sustain this level of service in the current economic climate.”
