Cuts Watch #258: Leadership opportunities for disadvantaged young people

27 Sep 2010, by in Cuts Watch

The Department for Education has cut funding for the ‘schools strand’ of the Youth of Today programme. The schools work, which began in February 2009 and was due to be completed in March 2011, was part of the overall Youth of Today programme which aims to improve the quality and quantity of youth leadership opportunities for disadvantaged 13 to 19 year olds.Children and Young People Now report that the citizenship resources produced by the Citizenship Foundation will now be available online until the end of October, at which point the Foundation will no longer be offering specific support to schools and teachers on youth leadership.

The rationale provided to the Foundation for the cut in their funding is that a ‘different approach to schools‘ is being taken by the new Government.
