The National Association of Voluntary and Community Action (Navca) could cut up to 18 jobs over the next six months following funding losses of around 50 per cent.

The Department for Education has cut funding for the ‘schools strand’ of the Youth of Today programme. The schools work, which began in February 2009 and was due to be completed in March 2011, was part of the overall Youth of Today programme which aims to improve the quality and quantity of youth leadership opportunities for disadvantaged 13 to 19 year olds.

Funny question, I know, but I don’t think the government are entirely clear. Ministers at last week’s Liberal Democrat conference, including Nick Clegg, gave the impression that they don’t think cuts are a good thing at all. They emphasised their view that the government isn’t just about cuts, they blamed the Labour government for them and pointed out that, if they had won the election, Labour would have been making its own cuts. I don’t think they would have been saying any of this if they saw cuts in a positive light.
But that isn’t how the Prime Minister feels.

We have previously reported on cuts to firework displays as a result of Government spending reductions. It now transpires that rather than cut the Blackheath show, Lewisham Council have set up an online appeal to raise money to fund the display.

Channel 4 Cuts Check has documented the extent of cuts to adult social care that are starting to take place across England. It transpires that as councils prepare for significant budget reductions caps on social care costs are being removed, meaning that elderly people will face significant increases in the costs they are required to pay for home care services that help them live independently.

A welcome addition to the cuts based blogosphere from Channel 4, where the Fact Check blog has launched a Cuts Check section. The new service seeks to scrutinise cuts as they are announced and to look into the details of their impacts. If you know of cuts affecting your neighbourhood or your workplace, they want to know at news@channel4.com.

PR agencies appear to be the latest part of the private sector to feel the impact of the Coalition’s cuts. PR week reports that a poll of 100 PR agencies has also revealed that 47 agencies with public sector clients have lost business as a result of government cuts.

Local cuts continue to reduce local services for children and young people, illustrating the significant impacts that even very small funding reductions can have for families and communities. For example, in Torquay the council has reportedly saved £6,000 by cutting funds for Friday night leisure centre youth sessions.

As part of the £6.2 billion in year cuts announced by the coalition Government on the 24th of May, £1.166bn is being cut in local government spending through reductions in individual grants given to local authorities. Area based grants (ABGs) are given to councils to help support deprived communities. The amount of ABG each local authority receives is therefore reflective of their individual needs and circumstances. In applying the cut to the ABG the Government has not taken in to account the particular circumstances of local areas: areas that are already badly off are more likely to feel the impact of reductions in these grants.
In this post I have looked at a selection of cities in the North East to give a picture of how the cuts are impacting on local areas, and how the North East has been particularly affected.

We’ve been careful here not to get involved in Labour’s leadership election – and indeed Touchstone contributors voted for different candidates.
But the way that unions are treated as “the other” in much media reporting is worthy of comment, including the BBC’s framing of where Ed Milliband now stands. It’s as if unions cannot be right about anything – and only consist of people who are somehow not quite legitimate members of society.
The most nonsensical aspect of this debate is counterposing the “squeezed middle” against the unions.
