Cuts Watch 273# More Early Years settings lose their capital grants
We have been reporting regulaly on cuts to capital funding for Early Years, which are emerging from all over the country since local authorities were told by the Department for Education in July to put on hold any funding not already ‘fully committed’. Now Nursery World further reports that last week more nurseries around the country have had their hopes for new or improved buildings dashed after funding awarded to them from the Early Years Capital Grant was withdrawn by their local authorities.
In Oxfordshire, 14 nurseries, pre-schools and children’s centres were notified that they will no longer receive funding for their projects, following a £2.75m cut by the Department for Education in Oxfordshire County Council’s capital funding.
Four nurseries and pre-schools in Devon were told last week that their capital funding has been scrapped after the DfE cut the council’s grant allocation by £1.6m.
Nursery World also reports two nursery schools face closure next summer under Edinburgh City Council’s plans to save £200,000 a year. The council is to launch a public consultation into proposals to close the nurseries if the plans are approved by the education committee in October.
