Welfare White Paper: A simpler but harsher system that won’t create jobs

11 Nov 2010, by in Society & Welfare

I have a post up at Left Foot Forward exploring the detail of today’s welfare reform White Paper. The Government’s committment to simplifying the benefits system, and to increasing the amount of benefits that some households can retain in work, is welcome. But there is also much to be concerned about. The proposals set out today will mean benefit cuts for some and much harsher treatment for many of the most vulnerable. They are also an inadequate response to the current jobs crisis – Government policy needs to focus more on creating work not on punishing those who can’t find jobs.
