Cuts Watch #352: Cold Case solutions

26 Jan 2011, by in Cuts Watch

Prospect, the union organising scientists at the Forensic Science Service warns that closure threatens the ability to solve hundreds of “cold cases“. The Service’s archives, its specialist scientists and technology have all helped at least 38 police forces to review historic offences, producing convictions in 220 cases. The planned cuts make no provision for saving the FSS’s one and a half million old case files (the police keep very little paperwork or evidence) or the in depth knowledge of the specialists.

There were more than 1,000 unsolved murders in the UK last year.
