This month’s Labour Market Report looks at the latest employment and unemployment statistics. Over the past twelve months the number of people in employment has grown by 584,000 but is that figure misleading? Average earnings growth is still below inflation but there are some indications that pay negotiations are starting to win higher settlements than we saw in the second half of 2012. How unions can build on this trend will be one of the key issues at this year’s TUC-IDS Pay Forum on 6 March.

The TUC’s latest Economic Report is now online and covers the UK’s ‘productivity paradox’.
The report analyses the relationship between estimates of productivity growth and the size of the structural deficit and surveys the recent debate between supply optimists and supply pessimists. It then goes on to look at eight commonly given explanations for the UK’s recent weakness in productivity growth.

Today’s announced closure of Maltby colliery, Yorkshire, one of the last six deep coal mines in the UK, with the loss of 540 skilled jobs, is a bitter blow to the NUM. Chris Kitchen, NUM National Secretary, said, “If we want to preserve the UK coal industry for security and diversity of supply, and not rely on imports, the remaining UK deep mining industry need to be recognised as a national asset. People need to realise that in the winter coal is generating 50% of our electricity. Obviously, the coal industry’s future lies with carbon capture technology. But delays in the CCS pilot projects are now putting an entire mining industry at risk, with 6,000 jobs at stake. We urgently need a transitional plan for coal, and measures in the Energy Bill to provide a place for UK coal in the future energy mix.”

The TUC’s latest Labour Market Report is now available online. Whilst there is good news, there is still cause for concern. Youth unemployment is still just under a million. Long term unemployment has continued to increase for those unemployed for over a year; 897,000 people have been unemployed for over one year and 444,000 people have been unemployed for over two years. Over 2 million people remain underemployed as 1.4m people are in part time work because they cannot find full time work, and 649,000 are in temporary work because they cannot find permanent work.
