From the TUC

A new era for manufacturing?

12 Sep 2008, by in Economics, Environment

This was an important week for manufacturing industry. The Government launched its refreshed manufacturing strategy in a document which states: “Looking forward, a thriving manufacturing sector is central to the future success of the British economy.”

We couldn’t agree more. But what will that sector look like? There is general agreement that low value, low skill work will migrate, as companies seek lower labour costs overseas. So if Britain’s future is to be secured on high value, high skill production, should we try to identify some cutting edge sectors on which to concentrate? Not picking winners, but building on our strengths. The TUC will say more about this in the months to come. In the meantime, one thing is certain. At last, there is no serious challenge to the idea that climate change is a real threat to the planet. So what about: “The UK: World Leader in Environmental Technology”. Impossible? Who says so?
