Copenhagen Diary #10: Sunny weather
As snow falls over the city, suddenly, the gloom lifts! This email has just arrived from co-ordinator Anabella to the ITUC delegation:
A new draft text for the final outcome of the whole work of the UN’s Ad hoc Working Group on Long-term Co-operative Action (AWG LCA), and guess what, the Just Transition and Decent Work (JT/DW) wording is in! It is not anymore under the shared vision, but in the preamble of the UN text. This is excellent news!
– contact your government, inform them about the para (last one in the preamble)
– ask them to support it now and also its uplifting into the Ministerial agreement, which will start being discussed tonight.
The text commits governments to support the new agreement, with this provision:
“Realizing that addressing climate change requires a paradigm shift towards building a low-emission society that presents substantial opportunities and ensures continued high growth and sustainable development, based on innovative technologies and more sustainable production and consumption; while ensuring a just transition of the workforce that creates decent work and quality jobs…”
Tomorrow we are due to meet UK DECC Minister Joan Ruddock, an early opportunity to press the ITUC’s case and get fairness at home and internationally enshrined in the final texts from this conference.
UPDATE: Please act now! Sign a quick Twitter petition to Ed Miliband to ask for his help with this, or drop him an email.
