Latest from Zimbabwe: repression continues

18 Apr 2010, by in International

Business Week’s Terry Bell recently interviewed the President of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), Lovemore Matombo, about the continuing repression of Zimbabwe’s trade unions. This repression, most recently reported in a 164- page report by the International Labour Organisation, explains why the action taken by the EU to restrict the travel of ZANU-PF thugs, needs to continue. Human rights have not been restored in Zimbabwe, and until they are, these measures should remain in place.

It is important to recognise that they are not “sanctions” as usually understood – they are targeted on individuals implicated in repression, and don’t harm the population of Zimbabwe at all. The firebrand leader of the ANC Youth League, Julius Malema, is therefore absolutely wrong to call for support for Robert Mugabe, and indeed his call for this has forced South African President Zuma to back pedal on the line he took when he visited the UK recently, that the EU measures should be relaxed.
