“Look at me and think of Arnold Schwarzenegger”
The Conservatives have been keen let everyone know about their love affair with the Governor of California. Perhaps that extends to cuts as well? If so, there’s a dreadful warning for us.
Back in 2007 Arnie spoke at the Conservative Party conference over a video link and David Cameron was keen to return the compliments – on a speaking tour in America:
“My wife said to me: ‘How are you going to explain to an American audience what sort of Conservative you are?’ I said: ‘I’ll say look at me and think of Arnold Schwarzenegger’.”
So perhaps it’s an interesting juxtaposition that California is also going through its budget-setting process. The “shockingly inhumane” Budget he has proposed simply eliminates the state’s welfare-to-work programme and all funding for childcare – California will, if this Budget passes, be the only state with no welfare programme for low income families with children. Other measures include a freeze in school funding, cuts in mental health care and workers’ compensation and reductions in disability benefits.
One thing that the coalition will be hoping won’t be reflected over here: the voters’ verdict. As he heads for retirement Governor Schwarzenegger’s poll ratings are falling heavily and leading Republicans fear that the race is unwinnable.
