Cuts Watch #123: Cuts in Westminster

09 Jul 2010, by in Cuts Watch

Westminster Council has now also published the financial report from its recent Cabinet meeting. This documents the £14 million of cuts to services that it is proposing in response to central government funding reductions. Cuts include:

  • Providing ‘less residential care’ and reviewing eligibility criteria for daycare services (saving several million pounds)
  • Cutting library and sports services
  • Cutting staff in planning and building control
  • ‘Rationalising’ street cleaning services and ending separate garden waste collections
  • Charging for public toilets, as well as reducing their numbers
  • Significant cuts in early years places, and less ‘preventative work’ with children

    Dear Nicola

You may be interested to note that Greenwich Council has written to those voluntary/charity organisations that it supports to budget for a 50% cut in its grants.

This will simply make the viabiltiy of such organisations very doubtful.

This information came in a letter my own organisation received. Though strangely we don’t get any funding from Greenwich beacuse we are based in Bexley – a neighbourhood Borough. We are yet to hear from Bexley and the local PCT what is going to happen here.

You may wish to confirm this info with (say) UNISON.
