Cuts Watch #116: Cuts in Norfolk

08 Jul 2010, by in Cuts Watch

Recent developments in Norfolk provide a vivid local example of how cuts are hitting local areas. Over £4m has been taken from chidren’s services, a further £5.6m has been removed from revenue and capital spending in grants for travel and transport, and £450,000 used to support some community services has also been withdrawn. Around 90 jobs are at risk.

Specific services that will be cut as a reduction of the grant are:

  • A 50% reduction in funding for the Connexions service – with staffing cut by 65 posts.
  • A loss of £316,500 in grants awarded via the Norfolk Youth Fund.
  • A £434,000 reduction in grant for school holiday activities for young people – although this summer’s programme will still go ahead, there will be an impact on future activities.
  • The deferral of about 30 or so safety schemes and public transport improvements, such as new footways or pedestrian safety refuges, to save £3.1m.
