Cuts Watch #119: consulting local people

09 Jul 2010, by in Cuts Watch

The Department for Communities and Local Government is discouraging local authorities from consulting their voters on whether to switch to directly-elected mayors and leaders. Describing these consultations as “another layer of costly red tape”, the Department’s press release says that the Coalition will repeal the legislation that requires councils to “go through this costly and time-consuming process.” Local government minister Grant Shapps has written to local authorities to say that, until the new legislation is in place, they should do the minimum necessary to comply with the law.
