Cuts Watch #138: Government Regional Offices

22 Jul 2010, by in Cuts Watch

This afternoon Eric Pickles announced the abolition of the Government Offices for the Regions.

This follows on from the announcement in the Coalition Agreement the government would “abolish the Government Office for London and consider the case for abolishing the remaining Government Offices.”

All Departments of central government have a presence in every region and failing to co-ordinate their work could lead to massive waste of resources. PCS has pointed out that 1,700 people work in GORs outside London and that an IPSOS MORI survey of stakeholders found that 77% of respondents were satisfied with them.

That figure did not include Mr. Pickles, who accused the Offices of being the “agents of Whitehall to intervene and interfere in localities.” The Comprehensive Spending Review will determine which functions still need to be carried out and the arrangements for the redeployment or release of the workers.
