Cuts Watch #166: Trident

02 Aug 2010, by in Cuts Watch

Unite has warned that cuts or delays in the Trident programme could lead to the loss of up to 13,000 jobs in Barrow, Faslane, Derby and Plymouth.

Much media reporting on this issue has focused on a possible argument between Defence Secretary Liam Fox and the Chancellor, but the news that the Treasury expects the Ministry of Defence to pay for Trident from its own budget has raised concerns that keeping Trident would necessitate even deeper cuts in most of the Ministry’s conventional programmes. Unite has pointed out that this would threaten even more jobs.
