Cuts Watch #229: Community Groups
A new study from the Young Foundation has warned that departments and agencies facing cuts of 15 – 25 per cent are planning cuts of 30 – 50 per cent in funding for civil society groups. The report – subtitled ‘can the Big Society be more than a slogan’ – concludes that:
At a time of severe cuts in public spending the risk of a decline in social wealth is real. As services shrink, people may turn inwards, to fatalism and resentment. There’s a risk of divisions becoming more acute, particularly in poorer areas.
