Cuts Watch #306: Jobs and services in local government
The scale of local government job cuts is becoming clear. The GMB report 1279 jobs at risk in Barnsley, 400 at risk in Stockport, 2,500 job losses to come in Stoke on Trent, 2,500 losses in Derbyshire, more than 6,000 in Lancashire and 1,855 to go in Warwickshire. GMB have also highlighted some of the services that will be affected. For exampoe, in Warwickshire cuts will include reductions in residential care for the elderly, people with physical disabilities and people with learning disabilities; loss of the whole of the Youth Service and the Positive About Young People partnership; removal of community transport and subsidised evening bus services; stopping the payment of nursery and childminding fees and reducing the funding for the education of looked after children and reductions in the maintenance of the county’s highways.
