Cuts Watch #338: new coins delayed

27 Dec 2010, by in Cuts Watch

New 5p and 10p coins, which were to be introduced on New Year’s Day, are instead being held back till April to give the automatic vending industry time to adjust their equipment.  The thicker coins, made of steel covered in nickel instead of copper, were announced in the Spending Review as a measure that will save £10 million a year. Bodies representing the vending machine industry have insisted from the start that they could not be ready by 1 January and still say that a January 2012 changeover is needed to allow time for all machines to be ready.
