VIDEO: Fairness and Prosperity online seminar

19 Jul 2011, by in Economics

Here’s the archive video from yesterday’s Touchstone online seminar on the links between equality within societies and their economic efficiency, with Professor Richard Wilkinson, Howard Reed, and Kate Green MP.

Thanks to Nutmeg Productions for webcasting the event and editing the archive footage for us, and to everyone who gave their time to attend in person and online, for a very interesting discussion.

We’re hoping to run a couple more of these seminars over the coming year. If you’ve any thoughts on how we could do it better, or make it easier for you to get involved, please do let us know.

I couldn’t make the online seminar, but really appreciated the opportunity to see the video today. It presents discussion of aspects of inequality, particularly wealth and environment, that equality legislation simply doesn’t deal with. Lots there for us to think about and use ….
Richard Wilkinson came over loud & clear, but I sometimes found it difficult to pick up what the top table were saying even though I have my speakers on max. volume.

I’ve only just watched the seminar video, but in the aftermath of the London riots I feel instinctively that inequality has had a large part to play. Especially since so many of the rioters are virtually children and therefore their reactions to events would be more socially driven rather than politico-economic.

I haven’t yet been able to articulate this feeling convincingly and would appreciate hearing from anybody whose mind is working along these lines.
